faxes can't be semt

My fax has never worked in the month that I have owned it. Called customer support and spent 45 minutes to no effect. I have one phone land line, my printer has its own jack. A phone in another room has a voice mail feature. Other features work. I've read the manual. What am I doing wrong? Cite any important pages.

    I found a reference from dell that the 948 doesn't support a cable modem. I have comcast cable. Can't I fax in manual mode
