Head Error

Hi,
my MD2010 printer cannot remember where its head is. starting up, the print head runs to the right side, bounces on but gets no stop signal and then the belt jumps over (with a horrable sound). I think the head gets no information about its position. Can anyone tell me how the print-head gets the information of its
position? Is it opto - electronical, can i clean a lens or something like.
Has anybody a technical description (not a manual)
