Network and Management Overview
Megabit Modem CRA-C User Manual 65
BOOTP conforms to the following RFCs:
RFC 951: Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP)
RFC 1533: DHCP Options and BOOTP Vendor Extensions
RFC 1542: Clarification and Extensions for the Bootstrap Protocol
(updates 951)
A BOOTP request is broadcast through the Ethernet port to the local network.
The request is not sent from the ADSL port because the boot sector does not
contain the code necessary to transmit over the WAN link. If a BOOTP server
is on the local network and is configured correctly, it returns a BOOTP
response. Once the Megabit Modem CRA-C receives a BOOTP response, it
keeps the IP address, boot server, default router, and any other information
associated with the module in the configuration sector of the flash. Subsequent
BOOTP responses for the Megabit Modem CRA-C are ignored.
When a BOOTP server is not on the local network, the request fails unless
there is a BOOTP agent on the network that recognizes and forwards the
request to the server. The BOOTP server does not contain an entry that
corresponds to the MAC address of the Megabit Modem CRA-C.
From the console interface, you can configure network parameters and
save them to flash so the BOOTP operation can be bypassed. The BOOTP
server should be connected to the same segment as the Megabit Modem
10BASE-T port.
