UDP broadcast
forwarding
The router can forward UDP broadcast packets for
UDP applications such as BootP. By forwarding the
UDP broadcasts, the router enables clients on one
subnet to find servers attached to other subnets.
NOTE: To completely enable a client UDP
application request to find a server on
another subnet, you must configure an IP
helper address consisting of the server IP
address or the directed broadcast address
for the subnet that contains the server. See
the next row.
The router helps forward
broadcasts for the
following UDP
application protocols:
bootps
dns
netbios-dgm
netbios-ns
tacacs
tftp
time
page 837
IP helper address The IP address of a UDP application server (such
as a BootP or DHCP server) or a directed broadcast
address. IP helper addresses allow the router to
forward requests for certain UDP applications from
a client on one subnet to a server on another
subnet.
