Besidestheseyourprintersupportssetscontainingjust symbols,suchasthe

Each emulat~onhas symbol sets
Yourlaserprinterworksby emulatingor followingcommandsdeveloped
originallyforotherprinters.Oneofthe StarLaserPrinter8’sadvantagesis
thatitoffersyouachoiceofseveralbuilt-insymbolsetsforeachfontineach
emulation.
TheactualEX-800,PropnnterandDiabloprintersdon’tusesymbolsetsto
produceinternationalaccentedcharactersandspecialsymbols.Instead,the
EX-800 and Propnnter let you define which charactersyou want with
parameter settings, and the Diablo lets you change pnntwhcels. Both
approachesproducemuchthe sameeffectas switchingsymbolsets,how-
ever,so we~llstickto this singleconceptthroughoutthismanual.
WhenyourStarLaserPrinter8is emulatingtheHP LaserJetH,thenormal
default’symbolset is the Roman-8 set. Roman-8includesall the usual
keyboardcharacters,numbersandsymbolsinASCII,plusaccentedforeign-
languagecharactersandspecialsymbols(butnothingfor linedrawing).
To complementthese,intheProprinteremulationyourStarLaserPrinter8
offerstwo separateIBMsymbolsets.Theseincludestandardline-drawing
andmathematicalsymbolsalongwith foreigncharacters.That makesthe
StarLaserPnntcr8agoodmatchforhundredsof wordprocessingandother
programs that expect these symbols, which most font designemomit
(especiallytheIBMHappyFace).
