4 I had the same problem with my AL1706. I could not get the monitor to show anything other than the ACER that shows up when you power it on. Then it would just go blank and the power button would blink. I took it all apart and inside there is two circuit boards. One for the power the other for the actual video. I noticed some odd looking bulging on a few capacitors so I bought new ones off of Amazon.com and soldered them in. It works now. I am not sure how long it will work. I just fixed it today. I hope to put an instructional video on Youtube but that could be a few weeks.

3 I'm running dual monitors, one of them the Acer AL1706, and that issue just cropped up. I have windows that open on the second screen so I wasn't able to access them. I unplugged the monitor and let it rest, and then plugged it back in. It came alive this time with a solid power button, as opposed to flashing which indicates trouble. I moved everything to a single screen for now figuring I might not have much time. Sure enough I didn't, and forgot about new mail messages opening over there. Anyway, this info might help with diagnosis, or with you accessing your desktop controls for one more time.
