When someone calls our phone number and nobody ans...

When someone calls our phone number and nobody answers, the answering machine no longer turns on, but the fax sound comes on. I believe this is due to a thunderstorm / lightning we had recently. What do I need to do to fix the problem? Many thanks for your help Frederik von Altenstadt
