RAM Capabilities/Limits...

I have an old Gateway computer manufactured in 2001. I am trying to increase the RAM. I have upgraded to one stick of 512mb, but it will not accept/recognize any more RAM when I install it. Does my computer have a RAM limit, and is it 512mb? I was trying to find the manual when I came across your website. Thank You.
