When I turn the dial to forward, the screen is dar...

When I turn the dial to forward, the screen is dark and I can't see anything. If I turn the dial to still, the light comes on and I can see a still image. if I go back and forth between forward and still to see a number of still images, it makes very loud and irritating noises.
