My SyncMaster 152v works fine except when I try to...

My SyncMaster 152v works fine except when I try to use a VGA Y splitter.For some reason when I hook up a 1 foot splitter,I get a message on the monitor screen that says "Video mode not supported"I know the monitor is ok because if I hook the monitor up directly up to my Dell desktop computer it works fine.Can you help me?
