5 Does the thing make ANY noises/beeps at all? (Like right after you turn it on?) Assuming you've already gone through checking to make sure the sound chipset is recognized by the OS and has the right driver installed/loaded...and that the volume buttons on the vaio itself are turned up and un-muted --> The next place I'd suggest looking is in the BIOS/SETUP utility (accessed by pressing F1,F2,F10,DEL, etc a few seconds after turning the machine on), and make sure that the onboard sound system is enabled.
