0 I've ordered this model (at a good price)... but I already have a Sony ICD-ST25 (a superior model with stereo mics, and stereo recording capability).... But- I'm thinking that you may not 'need' to turn it off. On my ST-25, on the back is a slider-switch that says 'hold'. All it does is turn off the LCD display. Whatcha gotta understand is... generally speaking, with LCD screens this small, the amount of power-consumption is so incredibly small, it's insignificant... and doesn't contribute to shortened battery life. So- this may be the case with your model as well. I believe that if you leave the unit in the 'record-ready' mode (pause)... or VOR-mode (begins recording when a sound is heard)... this may be using a bit more electricity, because all of the circuits are being used (except the speaker/headphone amp. But by far, the biggest drain on battery life, is when using headphones/earbuds (amp is powering both sides of the headphones... and/or, the primary speaker with the volume up high. If you look and read the manual carefully, I'll bet you find this in the manual... 'about the 'off' (or lack thereof) mode'. Think about it... that LCD isn't really larger than an LCD watch... and those batteries last from 1-5 years.... averaging around 3 years. If it really bugs you... if there is a 'hold' slider switch on the back (or anywhere else), it probably turns off the display. If you don't have the manual... there's lots of places online... don't buy one... just look for a free download... maybe even on the SonyUSA.com site.

0 I bought (then returned) this model... (because it DOES NOT have a USB port, or any way to move files from the recorder, to your computer.... except real-time duplicating)(bummer!). As to turning it on/off... there is no reall need to turn it off. Really! The device uses so little power when in static-mode ('stopped'... not playing or recording)... it only powers the LCD display, which is like the display on an LCD watch. You could leave it on for 3-5 years before the batteries need replacing. There is a "Hold" slider-switch, which is effectively, the 'On/Off' switch. It turns off the display, and prevents the unit from accidentally being put into record or playback (or any other modes). So... when not in use, simply move this slider-switch into the "Hold" position. If you don't plan on using the device for a long time... REMOVE the batteries! This is true of any battery-powered device, and keeps the batteries from leaking, and corroding the battery contacts.
