I have a Texas calculator TI-83 Plus and need instructions to find square and cube roots for a college class.

0 To find the square root of a number, use the square root key, which is above the x-squared key. You access it by pressing [2nd] [sqrt] The square root sign looks like a V symbol with an extra stroke at the top, but I use 'sqrt' here as the actual symbol is not on my keyboard. So the square root of 7 is [2nd] [sqrt] 7 [ENTER] which is about 2.289 There's no dedicated cube root key, so use the '^' key to raise a number to the power of 1/3, which is the same as calculating a cube root. To calculate the cube root of 7, we need both the 'power' [^] and 'reciprocal' [x-1] keys, so the key sequence would be 7 [^] 3 [x-1] [ENTER] to get approximately 1.9129 Note that [x-1] is a single key, and lies above the 'square' key. This raises 7 to the power of (1/3), which is the same as a cube root.
