Configuring Port Parameters
5-17
10. Select Enable from the Remote Fault Detect field pull down
menu to detect remote link errors.
*Note: You must set the remote fault detection
functionality to enable on both ends of a Cajun to
Cajun link in the following cases:
• When two Cajun gigabit ports are connected that do
not support auto-negotiation.
• When a Cajun gigabit port that does not support
autonegotiation is connected to a Cajun gigabit port
that does support autonegotiation. If two gigabit ports
that support autonegotiation are connected, you
should enable auto-negotiation.
You cannot concurrently enable autonegotiation and remote
fault detection. Autonegotiation must be disabled in order to
enable remote fault detection. When autonegotiation is
enabled, remote fault detection is automatically disabled.

Detailed Physical Port dialog box parameters.
Table 5-4. Detailed Physical Port Dialog Box Parameters
Parameter Definition
Name A user-assigned name for this port (possibly a drop name
or the name of the station or other device connected to
the port).
Category The User Port option is intended for use with switch
connections to end user nodes. It is intended for use with
switch connections to servers or other switches.
The Service Port allows the switch to generate both log
messages and alarm messages (traps). The User Port only
generates log messages. This prevents your network
management station from being overwhelmed by port
up/down messages that result from users turning
workstations on and off.
