Operating Modes
AsynchronousMode
AsynchronousModeisthenormaldefaultmodeofthemodem.Control andmonitoringisperformedbyexecuting
theATcommandsusingaPCfittedwithsuitablecommunicationssoftware.
SynchronousOperation
Yourmodemsupportstwosynchronousmodes.Mode1allowsoperationwithcomputerswhichsupport
asynchronousandsynchronouscommunicationonasingleRS232port.Mode2allowsyourmodemtobe
operatedwithdedicatedsynchronousterminals.
Althoughyourmodemcanonlyoperateoverasingletwowireconnection,itwillstillperformfullduplex
synchronouscommunication.HalfduplexoperationcouldbesimulatedbycontrollingthestateoftheRTSand
CTSsignals.
TerminalSpeeds
Yoursynchronousterminalorhostshouldusetheclocksignalsprovidedbythemodemtosynchronisetransmit
andreceivedata.Theclockspeedwillrepresenttheactualconnectionspeedofthemodem.
+ Whensynchronousmodeisselected,yourmodemcannotoperateinconstantspeedmodeorusetheerror
correctionordatacompressionfacilitiesofthemodem.Onlyvariablespeedmodeisavailable insynchronous
connections(thisreferstothemodem'sterminalspeed).
LineSpeeds
Yourmodemsupportsanumberofsynchronouslinespeeds.
Whenoperatinginsynchronousmode,yourmodemshouldalwaysbeconfiguredwithalocked,nonautoranging
Bsetting(thisreferstomodemlinespeed).
ForV.34,theBsettingonlysetsthemaximumspeed.Themodemwillautomaticallydeterminethehighestusable
speedfortheline.
SynchronousMode1
Synchronousmode1isselectedwiththe&M1command.

Yourmodemwillentersynchronousmodewheneveritsuccessfullyconnectstoaremotemodem.
