Charging the Battery
If thetractorhasnotbeenputintouseforanextendedperiodof
time,chargethe batterywithanautomotive-type12-voltchargerfora
minimumof onehourat sixamps.
Batteriesgiveoffan explosivegaswhilecharging.Chargebatteryin
awellventilatedareaandkeepawayfromanopenflameorpilotlight
asona waterheater,spaceheater,furnace,clothesdryerorother
gasappliances.
Cleaning the Battery
Cleanthebatterybyremovingitfromthetractorandwashingwith
a bakingsodaandwatersolution.If necessary,scrapethebattery
terminalswitha wirebrushtoremovedeposits.Coatterminalsand
exposedwiringwithgreaseorpetroleumjellytopreventcorrosion.
Battery Failures
Somecommoncausesforbatteryfailureare:
• Incorrectinitialactivation• undercharging
• Overcharging• corrodedconnections
• Freezing
ThesefailuresareNOTcoveredbyyourtractor'swarranty.
CHECKING MAIN HARNESS FUSE
• A 20ampfuseis installedin yourtractor'swiringharnessto
protectthetractor'selectricalsystemfromdamagecausedby
excessiveamperage.
• If theelectricalsystemdoesnotfunction,or yourtractor'sengine
willnotcrank,firstchecktobecertainthatthefuse hasnotblown.
• Thefusecanbefoundinsideofthedashpanelbehindthebattery
tray.Youmayneedto removethebatterytogainaccesstothe
fuse.Alwaysusea fusewiththesameamperagecapacityfor
replacement.
NOTE:A secondfuseholdercanbe foundinsidethedashpanel.This
fuseholderisusedfortheoptional12voltpoweroutlet.
ADJUSTMENTS
Neverattemptto makeanyadjustmentswhiletheengineis running,
exceptwherespecifiedintheoperator'smanual.Disconnectspark
plugwire(s)beforeperforminganyadjustments,repairsor mainte-
nance.
Steering and Transmission Linkage
Thesteeringtierodanddraglinksandtherelatedtransmissionlinkage
aresetatthefactoryandshouldnotrequirefurtheradjustment.
Becauseofthecomplexadjustmentprocedure,thesteeringand
transmissionlinkageshouldonlybe servicedoradjustedbya qualified
mechanic.If youexperienceproblemswith steering,or withtheIVT
transmission,contactyournearestSearsParts& RepairService
Centertohavethetractorinspected.
Seat
Afteradjustingtheseator beforedrivingthetractor,makesurethat
theseatadjustmentleverisengagedin theseatindexplateand
thattheseatwillnotmove.Donotadjustthe seatwhilethetractor
is beingdriven.Adjustingtheseatwhilethetractorismovingcould
causetheoperatorto losecontrolofthetractor.
1. Whilesittingintheseat,grasptheseatadjustmentleveronthe
Idt sideoftheseatandpullit upwardtodisengagefromtheseat
indexplate.SeeFigure14.

3. Oncethedesiredpositionisreached,releasetheseatlever.Slide
theseatslightlybackandforthasnecessaryto engagetheseat
leverintooneoftheeightadjustmentpositionsintheindexplate.
Makecertaintheseatislockedin position.
Side to Side Leveling the Deck
NOTE:Checkthetractor'stirepressurebeforeperforminganydeck
levelingadjustments.Referto"Tires"earlierinthissectionforinforma-
tionregardingtirepressure.
Ifthecuttingdeckappearstobe mowingunevenly,a sideto side
adjustmentcanbeperformed.Adjustifnecessaryasfollows:
1. Withthetractorparkedona firm,levelsurface,movethedeckto
themidheightposition(thirdorfourthnotch)usingthedecklift
lever.Rotatetheleft bladesothatit isperpendiculartothetractor
frame.Measureand recordthedistancefromtheoutsideofthe
leftbladetiptotheground.
2. Movingtotheothersideofthetractor,rotatetherightbladeso
thatit isperpendiculartothetractorframe,andmeasurethe
distancefromits outerbladetipto theground.
3. Bothmeasurementstakenshouldbeapproximatelyequal.If
they'renot,notewhethertheleftsideofthedeckisloweror
higherandproceedtothenextstep.
