Connecting UTP Cables
ThefixedRJ45frontpanelconnectionsofthe4G4202‐72and4G4282‐49are10/100/1000
Mbpsports.Theseportshaveinternalcrossovers,andalsosupportautomatic‐polarity
sensingwhenconfiguredforautomatic‐negotiation.
Ifautomatic‐negotiationisnotactivatedonaport,useastraight‐throughcablewhen
connectingaworkstation
totheport.Whenconnectinganetworkingdevicetotheport,
suchasabridge,repeater,orrouter,useacrossovercable.
Ifaportissetforauto‐negotiation,automatic‐polaritysensingisalsoactivated.
Automatic‐polaritysensingeliminatestheneedforacrossovercable,whetherthe
connectionisto
anothernetworkdeviceoraworkstation.
Inthisprocedure,the 4G4202‐72isusedastheexampletoconnectatwistedpairsegment
tothemodule.Itisalsoassumedthatthechassispoweristurnedontoprovidepowerto
themodule.RefertoFigure 3‐8onpage 3‐17and
proceedasfollows:
1. EnsurethatthedeviceconnectedtotheotherendofthesegmentispoweredON.
2. ConnectthetwistedpairsegmenttothemodulebyinsertingtheRJ45connectoron
thetwistedpairsegmentintotheappropriateRJ45portconnector.
3. Verifythatalinkexistsbycheckingthattheport
RX(Receive)LEDisON(flashing
amber,blinkinggreen,orsolidgreen).IftheRXLEDisOFFandtheTX(Transmit)
LEDisnotblinkingamber,performthefollowingstepsuntilitison:
a. Toviewthereceiveandtransmitactivityonagroupofsegments,pressthe
GROUPSELECT
button(seeFigure 3‐8onpage 3‐17)tosteptothegroupof
interest(Groups1through3onthe4G4202‐72,orGroups1through5onthe
4G4282‐49).EachtimetheGROUPSELECTbuttonispressed,aGROUPLED
lightsupinsequence,indicatingwhichGroupis
selected.Thereceiveand
transmitactivityfor thatgroupofsegmentsisthenindicatedbytheRXandTX
LEDsforeachsegment.
b. VerifythatthecablingbeingusedisCategory5UTPwithanimpedancebetween
85and111 ohms.Fortheporttooperateat100or1000Mbps,Category 5
cabling
mustbeusedandinstalledproperly.
c. Verifythatthedeviceattheotherendofthetwistedpairsegmentisonand
properlyconnectedtothesegment.
d. VerifythattheRJ45connectorsonthetwistedpairsegmenthavetheproper
pinoutsandcheckthecableforcontinuity.Typically ,acrossovercable
isused
betweennetworkdevices.Astraight‐throughcableisusedtoconnectbetween
switchesorhubdevicesandanendsystem(computer).RefertoFigure 3‐9and

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cabling with an impedance between 85 and 111 ohms.
Category 3 cable may be used if the connection is going to be used only for 10 Mbps.
