Chapter 8—Maintaining the Printer
Printhead Replacement
e printhead is subject to wear both from the direct thermal media (or
ribbon) and from the rapid heating and cooling process during printing.
us, the printhead will require periodic replacement.
Time between printhead replacements depends on the print images, the
type of direct thermal media (or ribbon) in use, the amount of energy
to the printhead, the print speed, the ambient temperature, and several
other factors.
While replacing the printhead, the power must be off. e
firmware will not detect the new printhead resistance until
the printer has been restarted.
Take precautions against electrostatic discharges by touch
-
ing a grounded object, for example the chassis of the printer
(assuming the printer is connected to a grounded wall
socket).
Install a replacement printhead this way:
1 Switch off the power to the printer.
2 Open the side door.
3 Lift the printhead by pulling out the printhead lever and flipping it
counterclockwise a quarter of a turn.
4 Remove any transfer ribbon.
5 Pull out the printhead straight forward.
6 Insert the replacement printhead so it engages the connectors on the
printhead bracket.
7 Reload the transfer ribbon, close the printhead, close the side door
and switch on the power.
