APPENDIX C: Check that the LAN Provides DHCP Setting Configurations to
Devices on the LAN
TO VERIFY:
1. On the PC/laptop open a COMMAND LINE box, ie. Start>Run>cmd.
2. Enter the command ipconfig /all parameters will be displayed.
3. Check if the DHCP is ON/ENABLED or OFF (Static IP setting operation). If OFF, make a note of the network
parameter IP settings for IP address, netmask, gateway, and DNS.
4. Make a note if DHCP is available on the LAN.
5. If DHCP is not available on the LAN make a note of the STATIC IP parameters that must be used on the LAN in order
to access Internet.
Alternative method to check if the PC/laptop is operating using STATIC IP settings or DHCP
1. Navigate to Start>Settings>Network & Dial-Up Connections>Local Area Connection>Properties>Internet
Properties>TCP/IP>Properties.
2. If automatic settings are in use then the PC is using DHCP from the LAN, rather than STATIC settings (which would
be indicated by the IP address fields being empty).
