Turn off the computer and wait 3 to 5 minutes to let the computer cool before opening the computer
cover.
This section provides instructions on how to open the computer cover.
1. Remove any media (diskettes, CDs, or tapes) from the drives, shut down your operating system, and
turn off all attached devices and the computer.
2. Unplug all power cords from electrical outlets.
3. Disconnect the cables attached to the computer. This includes power cords, input/output (I/O) cables,
and any other cables that are connected to the computer. See “Connectors on the front of the computer”
on page 65
and “Connectors on the rear of the computer” on page 66.
4. Remove any locking devices, such as a cable lock that secures the computer cover.
5. Press the cover-release button on the side of the cover and pivot the computer cover outward.
6. If the computer cover is to be removed, disconnect all the cables from the system board.
Replacing the CMOS battery
This procedure describes how to remove and replace the CMOS battery.
If the CMOS battery fails, the date, time, and conguration information (including passwords) are lost. An
error message is displayed when you turn on the computer.
Important
Refer to “Safety notices (multi-lingual translations)” on page 6 for information about replacing and disposing
of the battery.
CAUTION:
When replacing the lithium battery, use only Part Number 33F8354 or an equivalent type battery
recommended by the manufacturer.
