Installing Passport 8600 Switch Modules
The front of the module contains the physical layer devices, including the optical
transceivers and the MAC controllers.
Passport 8608GBE Module
The Passport 8608GBE Module (Figure 1) provides eight bays for installing
gigabit interface converters (GBICs). The fiber ports on the GBICs allow you to
make riser connections, server attachments, or interswitch links.

The following types of GBICs are available:
• 1000BASE-SX
• 1000BASE-LX
• 1000BASE-ZX
• 1000BASE-XD

Figure 2 shows the location of the Passport 8608GBE Module LEDs.
Note: Only GBICs qualified by Nortel Networks are supported for use
in the Passport 8608GBE Module. For specific model numbers, refer to
the Nortel Networks price list.
