matted diskette you have in the drive.
Normally FORMAT will detect an already formatted
16-sector diskette (including DOS 3.3 and Apple
Pascal diskettes), but given certain circum-
stances it may not. Therefore, you should not
rely upon this check. If FORMAT does find the
diskette to be already formatted, it will say:
Disk in drive d>: will be ERASED.
Continue (Y/N)?
If you reply <Y><RETURN>, FORMAT will go ahead
and format the diskette (erasing everything that
was on the diskette, for ever and ever). If you
reply <N><RETURN>, FORMAT will return to the
“which disk?” question without formatting the
diskette.
Once you let FORMAT go ahead and do its job, it
will say:
Formatting...
The time it takes to format a diskette varies
directly with the type of format FORMAT has to
perform. Disk II formats are done in about 30
seconds (because there’s not much to do). A
full Elite Three format can take well over a
full minute (there is four times the storage to
he formatted than what is necessary for a Disk
II).
