Troubleshooting and Maintenance
Error Messages
You may occasionally encounter a difficulty with your machine or telephone line. If this happens,
your machine often identifies the problem and displays an error message. The list below explains the
most common error messages.
ERROR MESAGE CAUSE ACTION
CHECK PAPER The paper is jammed in the machine. See Clearing Jams on page 67.
CHECK PAPER
PRESS START KEY
The FAX/MFC is out of paper or
paper is not properly loaded in the
multipurpose sheet feeder.
Refill the paper or remove the paper
and load it again and then press
Start.
CLEAN UP
SCANNER
The scanner is dirty. See Regular Maintenance on
page 70.
COMM.ERROR A poor quality phone line resulted
in a communications error.
Try the call again.
CONNECTION FAIL
You have requested a polling call
from another party, but the other fax
machine is not in Poll Waiting mode.
Verify the other parties polling
setup.
DISCONNECTED The other party has disconnected
during a call or fax.
Try calling the other party.
DOCUMENT JAM The documents were not inserted or
fed properly, or were too long.
See Clearing Jams on page 67.
MACHINE ERROR
XX
There is a mechanical problem. Cut the power off. Then contact
your Brother dealer for service.
NO RESPONSE/
BUSY
The number you called does not
answer or is busy. You may also
have reached a number not
connected to a fax.
Check the number and call again.
NOT ASSIGNED Youve tried accessing a One
Touch or Speed Dial location with
no number assigned to it.

information about storing One
Touch or Speed Dial numbers.
PRINTER FAULT The print head has overheated. Unplug the machine and wait 30
minutes for it to cool.
SCANNER ERROR Scanner needs cleaning. Clean the white tape and the glass
strip under the tape. See Regular
Maintenance on page 70. If you
still get a scanner error, contact
Brother dealer for service.
TOP COVER OPEN The top cover is not completely
closed.
Close the top cover.
