About the modem
My internal modem does not work
❑ Check that the phone line is plugged into your computer.
❑ Check that the phone line is working. You can check the line by plugging in an ordinary phone and
listening for a dial tone.
❑ Check that the phone number the program is dialling, is correct (refer to the information you recieved
from your Internet Service Provider).
❑ In the Phone and Modem Options dialog box (Control Panel / Printers and other Hardware /
Phone and Modem Options), check that your modem is listed on the Modems tab, and that the
location information is correct on the Dialing Rules tab.
❑ Whenever you use your modem while travelling, make sure that the country of the active location
defined in the Phone and Modem Options dialog box matches the country you are dialling from.
My modem cannot establish a connection
❑ The modem dialling mode may be incompatible with your telephone line.
❑ The modem may not work properly if you are behind a Private Automatic Branch exchange (PABX).
❑ Make sure that the modem is the only device connected to your telephone line.
My modem connection is slow
Many factors influence modem connection speed, including telephone line noise or compatibility with
telephone equipment (such as fax machines or other modems). If you think your modem is not connecting
properly to other PC-based modems, fax machines, or your Internet Service Provider, check the following:
❑ Have your phone company check that your phone line is free from any line noise.
