Solving Hard Drive Problems
Some common causes and solutions for hard drive problems are listed in the following
table.

Problem Probable Cause Solution(s)
Reading hard drive takes an
unusually long time after
restarting the computer.
System entered Hibernation
due to low-battery condition
and is now exiting from it.
Give the system time to restore the
previously saved data to its exact state
before Hibernation.
Hard drive error occurs. Hard drive has bad sectors or
has failed.
Run Computer Checkup.
See POST error messages.
Hard drive does not work. Hard drive is not seated
properly.
Turn off the computer, remove and reinsert
the hard drive, then turn the computer on.
Hard drive is damaged. Replace the hard drive.
Solving CD-ROM Drive Problems
Some common causes and solutions for CD-ROM drive problems are listed in the
following table.

Problem Probable Cause Solution(s)
CD-ROM drive cannot read a
compact disc.
Compact disc is upside down
or is improperly inserted in
the CD-ROM drive.
Open the CD loading tray, lay the compact
disc in it (label side up), then close the tray.
CD-ROM drive does not
work.
CD-ROM drive is not seated
properly.
Shut down the computer, remove and
reinsert the drive, then turn on the
computer.
CD-ROM drive was inserted
while the computer was on, in
Suspend, or in Hibernation.
Shut down computer; then turn it on again.
The drive is initialized during power up.
