Installing a Switch
Environmental Conditions
Consider the factors that affect the climate in your facility such as equipment
heat dissipation and ventilation. The switch requires the following operating
conditions:
Operating temperature range: 5 – 40°C (41 – 104°F)
•Relative humidity: 5 – 90%, non-condensing
Installing a Switch
Installing a McDATA 4416 switch module involves the following steps:
1. Install SFP Transceivers
2. Mount the Switch Module in the Server Chassis
3. Connect the Management Workstation to the Switch Module
4. Start McDATA Embedded Web Server or McDATA Element Manager
5. Configure the Switch Module
6. Cable Devices to the Switch
Install SFP Transceivers
The switch module has been validated with transceivers that support a
variety of interconnection media. To install a transceiver, insert the
transceiver into the port and gently press until it snaps in place. The
transceiver will fit only one way. If the transceiver does not install under
gentle pressure, turn it over and try again.
NOTE: If you have installed the Port Activation PFE key, all six external ports are
enabled. Otherwise, only ports 10–13 are enabled.
To remove a transceiver, gently press the transceiver into the port to release
the tension, then pull on the release tab or lever and remove the transceiver.
Different transceiver manufacturers have different release mechanisms.
Consult the documentation for your transceiver.
