Calculating the Mod 10 Check Digit:
If you wish to encode the UPC-A data “01234567890”, follow these
steps to find the correct check digit.
1. First add all the numbers in the ODD positions.
i.e., 0+2+4+6+8+0 = 20
2. Multiply the result of Step 1 by 3.
i.e., 20 x 3 = 60
3. Add up all the numbers in the EVEN positions.
i.e., 1+3+5+7+9 = 25
4. Add the result of Step 2 to that of Step 3.
i.e., 60 + 25 = 85
5. Subtract the result of Step 4 from the next highest increment
of 10.
i.e., 90 - 85 = 5
6. The correct Modulo 10 check digit for the 11 digit string
“01234567890” is 5.
