5.14. Using the LANServer to allow customers to upload files
The LANServer can serve a file in such a way that your browser will open the 'Open/Save
As' Dialog to allow a user to save the file on their local computer. All that is necessary to
achieve this is:
• Ensure the file is present on the LANServer
• Have a web page with a link to the file.
When the user browses such a page and clicks the link, the LANServer will serve the file,
causing the Browser to ask the user if they want to open the file or save it on their local disk.
Note the following restrictions;
• Only certain file types will produce this dialog.
o Image files (bmp, gif, jpg) are served as images
o OCX files are served as plain text
o Other files are served as applications (this is what produces the 'Save As'
dialog)
• There are limits on the amount of disk space available to store these files.
• The file name must adhere to the DOS8.3 naming convention which, requires that a
file name may not consist of special characters, that there may only be one period in
the file name and that there may be no more than 8 characters before and three after
the period. Thus these are valid file names abcdefgh.xyz a.zip. These file names
are invalid. ab%%.qoqoq long_file_name.zip
