Applications
Voice over Frame
Relay or Voice over
IP
The Vanguard 6435 and Vanguard 6455 can support Voice over Frame Relay
(VoFR) or Voice over IP (VoIP) as shown in Figure 1-4. In this example, the
Vanguard 6435 supports multiple voice lines in the remote branches, which can be
set up as extensions on a PBX. These voice connections can be routed over Frame
Relay or over IP, or routed over both transmission paths. The Frame Relay link can
provide a high-speed connection between branches and the head office for voice and
data. The LAN (Ethernet) link connects the Vanguard 6435 with the Internet Service
Provider (ISP) to provide the IP link (for a possible company Intranet).

Virtual Private
Network through
Data Encryption
This application example (Figure 1-5) shows how a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
can be created by encrypting data before it is transmitted over Frame Relay or X.25
networks. There is no security and privacy for unencrypted data as it moves from one
location to another through the public network. After encryption, the Vanguard 6435
offers secure transmission of data over any shared public medium, creating a virtual
private network.
