Chapter 6 Installing and Removing a SPA
Online Insertion and Removal
Step 3 After the SPA is properly seated, fasten the SPA in place with the captive screws, as shown in Figure 6-3
or Figure 6-5.
Removing a SPA from a SIP
Caution The system can indicate a hardware failure if you do not follow proper procedures or you remove a SPA
while the software configuration is being applied. After installing a SPA, wait at least 30 seconds before
attempting to remove it. After you remove a SPA, wait at least 15 seconds before installing another SPA
in the same subslot.
To remove a SPA from a SIP, see Figure 6-2 or Figure 6-4 and follow these steps:
Step 1 If attached, remove any cables from the SPA.
Step 2 To remove the SPA from the SIP, unfasten the captive screws on the SPA, as shown in Figure 6-3 or
Figure 6-5.
Step 3 Grasp the handles of the SPA and pull the SPA from the SIP.
Online Insertion and Removal
Cisco CRS-1 router SIPs and SPAs support online insertion and removal (OIR). SPAs can be inserted or
removed independently from the SIP. Online insertion and removal of a SIP with installed SPAs is also
supported.

This section provides references for the installation, removal, and cleaning of optical devices.
Installing and Removing Small Form-Factor Pluggable Modules
For information on installing small form-factor pluggable (SFP) modules, see Gigabit Interface
Converter (GBIC) Module and Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) GBIC Module Installation
Information and Specifications. The following sections of that document are particularly useful when
installing an SFP module:

SPAs accept only supported optical devices. The list of supported optical devices can be found in the
“Modular Optics Compatibility” section in the product overview chapter in this guide.
