4.2 ASTRA™
Automatically SwiTched Reading Area™ is the Datalogic technology based on a
multi-laser architecture and a fixed mounted optic system which concentrates the multiple
laser emissions in a single laser beam. As each laser emitter is focused on a specific range
of the reading area, a sophisticated electronic controller selects the best focused laser
emitter with respect to the code read. Since there is no mechanical movement but electronic
device switching, the laser selection is extremely fast (few tens of nanoseconds). This allows
the reading of medium-high density codes in a large reading area on very fast conveyors.
The DS6500 scanner is based on a dual laser optic platform and ASTRA™ technology
inherited from the DS8100 scanner. This technology is based on the capability of the
barcode reader to measure the distance from the scanned object. According to the value of
this distance signal, the reader decides which laser is supposed to be turned on. As a result,
the total depth of field (DOF) of the reader is increased without any moving part involved: this
means higher reliability and extremely low reaction time.
Figure 73 – ASTRA™
The figure above gives a graphical representation of the ASTRA™ functionality, where the
real time switching between the two laser diodes increases the overall depth of field, that is
the sum of each individual laser depth of field.
The ASTRA™ functionality has been designed for applications when an extended real time
DOF is requested, like reading parcels on fast moving conveyors. This is the typical situation
in the Transportation & Logistics industry, when the sortation of huge quantities of parcels is
solved by means of barcode readers.
