Turning Off the System
This section provides step-by-step instructions for powering down your
Model 744.
CAUTION: If you have a local disk attached to the Model 744, do not turn off power to
the system without first shutting down the operating system software
according to the following procedure. Turning off the power for your system
without first doing the shutdown procedure may result in damage to data on
your disk. Always execute the shut-down process to completion first.
1 Exit all processes currently running.
2 Enter the following command to bring the system to a halted state
reboot -h
This gives a zero-length “grace period” before the system goes down to
the halted state.
3 After completing several shutdown procedures, the system eventually dis-
plays one of the following messages:
HP-UX Message
Halted, you may now cycle power.
HP-RT Message
**** HP-RT OS is down ****
Halting (in tight loop) -- OK To Hit Reset Button
4 At this time the system no longer responds to keyboard input and you may
turn off the power. Turning the system back on initiates the boot se-
quence.
If you want to shutdown and reboot automatically, instead of the above pro-
cedure, simply enter the reboot command with no options.
See reboot(1M)) for various other options.
