VLANs provide some of the following benefits:
Reduced costs
As a company grows and reorganizes, physical moves, adds, and re-cabling
are made to their network. VLANs provide a cost effective solution to
network changes. Because VLANs are location independent, adds and moves
are quickly accomplished without the need to rewire the physical
infrastructure.
Better security
VLANs offer security by logically separating groups by departments,
functions, etc., therefore, limiting and/or restricting user access and
priviledges to specific applications and resources.
Efficient use of network bandwidth
VLANs maximize the efficient use of bandwidth on any given LAN segment,
since packets are forwarded only between segments as required. In addition,
VLANs create smaller broadcast domains which reduce the amount of
broadcast traffic across the entire network.
