Youcannarrowthelistofpossibilitiesbyusingextendedresultcodes.Extendedresultcodesareenabledby
default.Iftheyhavebeendisabled, enterATV1X4andpressENTERwhileinterminalmode,orincludeV1X4inthe
modem’sinitializationstring.Whenyoudialagain,themodemreportsthecall’sprogress.
● IfthemodemreportsNODIALTONE,checkthatthemodem’stelephonelinecableisconnectedtoboththe
modem’sLINEjack(notthePHONEjack)andthetelephonewalljack.Ifthecablelookssecure,tryreplacingit.
Ifthatdoesn’twork,theproblemmightbeinyourbuilding’stelephoneinstallation.Totestthebuilding
installation,plu
gatelephoneintoyourmodem’stelephonewalljackandlistenforadialtone.Ifyouheara
dialtone,yourmodemmightbeinstalledbehindacompanyphonesystem(PBX)withaninternaldialtone
thatsoundsdifferentfromthenormaldialtone.Inth
atcase,themodemmightnotrecognizethedialtone
andmighttreatitasanerror.CheckyourPBXmanualtoseeifyoucanchangetheinternaldialtone;ifyou
can’t,changeyourmodem’sinitializationstringtoreplaceX4withX3,whichcausesthemodemtoignoredial
tones(note,however,tha
tX3isnotallowedinsomecountries,suchasFranceandSpain).
● IfthemodemreportsBUSY,theothernumbermightbebusy.Tryagainlater,oritmightindicatethatyou
failedtoadda9prefixtothephonenumberifyoumustdial9foranoutsideline.
● Ifyoumustdial9togetanoutsideline,theeasiestwaytodialitautomaticallyistoincludeitinthemodem’s
dialprefix,forexample,ATDT9,.Notethecomma,whichinsertsapausebeforethenumberisdialed.By
inserting9,intothedialprefix,youdonothavetoin
cludeitineachdirectoryentry.
● TochangethedialprefixinWindows98HyperTerminal,selectCallfromtheCallmenu,clickDialing
Properties,andtype9inthelocalandlongdistanceboxesinHowIdialfromthislocation.
● IfthemodemreportsNOANSWER,theothersystemhasfailedtogooff‐hook,oryoumighthavedialeda
wrongnumber.Checkthenumber.
● IfthemodemreportsNOCARRIER,thephonewasansweredattheotherend,butnoconnectionwasmade.
Youmighthavedialedawrongnumber,andapersonansweredins teadofacomputer,oryoumighthave
dialedthecorrectnumber,buttheothercomputerorsoftwarewasturnedofforfaulty.Checkthenu
mber
andtryagain,ortrycallinganothersystemtomakesureyourmode misworking. Also,trycallingthenumber
onyourtelephone.Ifyouhearharshsounds,thenanothermodemisansweringthecall,andthemodems
mightbehavingproblemsnegotiatingbecauseofmodemi
ncompatibilitiesorlinenoise.Tryconnectingata
lowerspeed.
ModemDisconnectsWhileOnline
● IfyouhaveCallWaitingonthesamephonelineasyourmodem,itcaninterruptyourconnectionwhen
someonetriestocallyou.IfyouhaveCallWaiting,disableitbeforeeachcall.Inmosttelephoneareasin
NorthAmerica,youcandisableCallWaitingbyprecedingthetelephonenumberwith*70(checkwithyo
ur
localtelephonecompany).
● YoucanautomaticallydisableCallWaitingbyincludingthedisablingcodeinthemodem’sdialprefix(e.g.,
ATDT*70,—notethecomma,whichinsertsapausebeforethenumberisdialed).Tochangethedialprefixin
Windows98HyperTerminal,selectCallfromtheCallmenu,clickDialingProperties,checkThislocationhas
CallWa
iting,andselectthecorrectcodeforyourphoneservice.
● Ifyouhaveextensionphonesonthesamelineasyourmodem,youorsomeoneelsecaninterruptthe
connectionbypickingupanotherphone.Ifthisisafrequentproblem,disconnectthee xtension phones
beforeusingthemodem,orinstallanotherphonelineespeciallyforthemodem.
● Checkforlooseconnectionsbetweenthemodemandthecomputerandthetelephonejack.
