Connecting UTP Cables to RJ45 Mini-GBIC Ports
TheRJ45Mini‐GBIC(MGBIC‐02)portsare10/100/1000Mbpsportsandhaveinternal
crossovers.Whenconnectingaworkstationtotheseports,useastraight‐throughcable.
Whenconnectingnetworkingdevicestotheseports,suchasabridge,repeater,orrouter,
useacrossovercable.
Toconnecttwistedpairsegmentstothe
switch,refertoandproceedasfollows:
1. Ensurethatthedevicetobeconnectedattheotherendofthesegmentis
powered ON.
2. ConnectthetwistedpairsegmenttotheswitchbyinsertingtheRJ45connectoronthe
twistedpairsegmentintotheRJ45Mini‐GBIC.
3. Verifythatalinkexistsby
checkingthattheLink/Activi tyLEDisON(solidgreenor
blinkinggreen).IftheLink/ActivityLEDisOFF,performthefollowingstepsuntilitis
on:
a. VerifythatthecablingbeingusedisCategory 5orbetterwithanimpedance
between85and111 ohmswithamaximumlengthof100meters(328
feet).
b. Verifythatthedeviceattheotherendofthetwistedpairsegmentisonand
properlyconnectedtothesegment.
c. VerifythattheRJ45connectorsonthetwistedpairsegment havetheproper
pinoutsandcheckthecableforcontinuity.Typically ,acrossovercableisused
betweenhubdevices.
Astraight‐throughcableisusedtoconnectbetween
switchesorhubdevicesandanenduser(computer).RefertoFigure 3‐16and

Note: RJ45 Mini-GBIC ports support Category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cabling
with an impedance between 85 and 111 ohms. Category 3 cable may be used if the
connection is going to be used only for 10 Mbps.
