Dell D620 Laptop User Manual

One of the batteries on the Latitude™ D620 is unique to Dell: It has an
extended piece that runs along the front edge of the system. Due to
this design as well as a new method of latching the batteries into the
chassis, you cannot swap batteries between the Latitude™ D620 and
other older Latitude D Series units.
Dell offers three different batteries:
4-cell Lithium Ion (35 WHr)
6-cell Lithium Ion (53 WHr)
9-cell Lithium Ion (85 WHr) — includes palm rest
Battery Operation
Battery operating time varies depending on operating conditions. You can install an optional second battery in the module bay to
significantly increase operating time.
Operating time is significantly reduced when you perform operations including, but not limited to, the following:
Using DVD, DVD-R, and CD-RW drives
Using wireless communications devices, PC Cards™, or USB devices
Using high-brightness display settings, 3D screensavers, or other power-intensive programs such as 3D games
Running the computer in maximum performance mode
You can check the battery charge before you insert the battery into the computer. The battery has an indicator that displays from
one to five dots, indicating an approximate charge level. You can also set power management options to alert you when the
battery charge is low.
When you connect the computer to an electrical outlet or install a battery while the computer is connected to an electrical outlet,
the computer checks the battery charge and temperature. If necessary, the AC adapter then charges the battery and maintains
the battery charge.
If the battery is hot from being used in the computer or being in a hot environment, it may not charge when you connect the
computer to an electrical outlet.
The battery is too hot to start charging if the battery
light flashes alternately green and orange. Disconnect the computer from the
electrical outlet and allow it and the battery to cool to room temperature. Then connect the computer to an electrical outlet to
continue charging the battery.
Charging the Battery
The battery operating time is largely determined by the number of times it is charged. After hundreds of charge and discharge
cycles, batteries lose some charge capacity or battery health. That is, a battery can show a charged status but maintain a
reduced charge capacity (health).
Check the Battery Charge
To check the battery charge, press and release the status button on the battery
charge gauge to illuminate the charge level lights. Each light represents
approximately 20 percent of the total battery charge. For example, if four lights
are on, the battery has 80 percent of its charge remaining. If no lights appear,
the battery has no charge.
Check the Battery Health
To check the battery health using the charge gauge, press and hold the status button on the battery charge gauge for at least 3
seconds. If no lights appear, the battery is in good condition, and more than 80 percent of its original charge capacity remains.
Each light represents incremental degradation. If five lights appear, less than 60 percent of the charge capacity remains and you
should consider replacing the battery.
Battery Health Meter
On currently shipping platforms, a new feature called the Battery Health Meter (BHM) has been added to help identify problems
with a battery.

NOTE:
You cannot use an auto/air adapter with a 9-cell battery.
NOTE:
You can check battery health in one of two ways: Use the charge gauge on the battery as described below, or use
the Battery Meter in the Dell™ QuickSet utilities. For information about QuickSet, right-click the icon in the
taskbar, and click Help.
