3.8.1 Introduction
Inno rthernclimates,thebuildupoficeorsnowonantennascanbeaproblemformillimeterwave
radioinstallations.Theseproblemsaretwofold:theelectricaleffectofsnowandicebuiltuponthe
antenna’sradome;andthemechanicalimpactoftheadditionalweight ofthesnoworiceonthe
antennaa ndsuppo rtingstructure.
Theformationoficeorsnowontheantennasradomeca ncauseattenuationofthesignaltothepoint
wherethelinkmaybecomeseverelydegradedorunusable.Unevenicebuildupcancausescatteringof
thesignal,whichinturnresultsinstandingwaves.
Icelayersarenotlikelytoexistforext endedperiods,asicetendstomelt.In coldclimateswhenthe
radomeisbelo wfreezingtemperature,icedoesnotsticktoit,thusthereisno issue.Howeverin
mixedrainsnowicestorms,icecansticktot heradome,causingthelinktoo perat eatlessthanits
optimaldesign.
Oncetheicehashardenedandfreezes,theaddedweightoftheiceontheantennaincreasesthewind
loadont hetowerormast,whichmaycauseprematurefailureofthemountingstructure.Asicebreaks
apartduetomelting,orviaitsownweight,theselargeandheavysheetsfallingdownatowerormast
cancausedamagetoantennasorotherobjectsmountedbelow.
