Superior D-Max for superior prints
One of the biggest breakthroughs of Epson UltraChrome
K3 technology is its ability to achieve a D-Max that rivals
and even surpasses that of other ink technologies — even
silver halide. This higher D-Max produces greater image
detail in dark and shadow areas and is especially
important for black-and-white photography.
Two different ink formulations
Epson UltraChrome K3 technology features two
interchangeable black ink formulations — Photo Black
and Matte Black.
The Photo Black ink is encapsulated in a special resin
that allows it to bond onto glossy and semigloss photo
papers. It uses an improved ink formulation that
produces a D-Max of up to 2.4. The ink set also uses
reformulated color pigments for a higher color gamut.
Photo Black ink is suitable for printing on all papers,
but produces its best print quality when used with
the Epson Premium Photographic Papers.
The Matte Black ink optimizes matte prints with a
higher optical density by controlling the penetration
level to keep the colorant near the surface. The Matte
Black ink produces its best print quality on matte
papers, including Fine Art Papers.
Q
&
A
What makes Epson UltraChrome K3 prints
so scratch-resistant?
Epson UltraChrome K3 ink technology uses a
different method of “binding” the particle of
pigment and the glossy resin encapsulation,
called “Crosslinking Chemistry.” This chemical
process makes the prints significantly harder than
the previous Epson UltraChrome ink technology.
As a result, the scratch resistance is amazing
on normal RC or photographic-grade media.

EPSON GLOSS AND SEMIGLOSS PAPERS
Gloss differential and
metamerism virtually
eliminated!
New Epson UltraChrome K3
ink technology virtually
eliminates gloss differential and metamerism. So you can
look forward to stunning color and black-and-white
prints that surpass even traditional silver halide prints.
How Epson UltraChrome K3 reduces gloss differential
Gloss differential generally occurs on glossy papers and
appears when the gloss level of the paper is different
from the gloss of the ink. It’s most noticeable in highlight
areas where there’s little or no ink saturation. Epson
UltraChrome K3 technology features a new resin
encapsulation technology that provides better overall
glossiness and reduces the gloss difference between ink
and paper.
How Epson UltraChrome K3 reduces metamerism
Metamerism is an effect in which colors look different
under dissimilar light sources. By using new pigments,
resin encapsulation and three levels of black (Black,
Light Black and Light Light Black), Epson UltraChrome
K3 technology reduces the effects of metamerism and
bronzing to a level below what the human eye can detect.
