Thetelephonecablemaybedamagedortheconnectionsmaybeloose.Usewindows
applicationtocheckdevicecanworkfineornot.Attempttoconnectthecomputertoa
networkthroughusingthemodem.Ifthemodemdoesnotfunctionatall,gotoProcedure3.
Iftheattemptfailsbecausethecomputerdetectsnotelephonesignal,thefaultmaybeinthe
telephonecable,thewallsocketorthemodemport.PerformCheck1:
Check1 Makesuretelephonecableisfirmlypluggedintoboththetelephonewallsocket
andthemodemportofthecomputer.Ifthecableisconnectedcorrectly,goto
Check2.
Check2 Makesurethemodemportisfirmlysecuredtothesystemboardofthecomputer.
Ifthemalfunctionremains,gotoCheck3.
Check3 Thetelephonecablemaybedamaged.Replacewithagoodcable.Ifthe
malfunctionremains,gotoProcedure2.

DisassemblethecomputerfollowingthestepsdescribedinChapter4,Replacement
Proceduresandensurethatthemodemcardiswellconnectedtothesystemboard.Ifthe
problempersists,performProcedure3.
Procedure3 Modemreplacementcheck
ThemodemcardorRJ-11jackmaybefaulty.Tryreplacingthem.Iftheproblempersists,the
systemboardmaybedefectiveordamaged.ReplacetheSystemBoardwithanewone
followingthestepsinChapter4,ReplacementProcedures.
