support.dell.com Rack Installation Guide 1-7
Marking the Rack
1. Determine where you want to place the bottom of the system.
CAUTION: If you are installing more than one system, install the first
system in the lowest available position in the rack.
2. Place the 1-U template over the front of the two-posts of the rack in the desired
location.
3. Align the bottom of the template with the desired bottom position of the system
chassis.
4. Mark the upper and lower mounting positions on the vertical rails as shown by
the V-notches on the sides of the template.
Each 1-U (1.75-inch) vertical space has three holes, with center-to-center spacing
between holes (beginning at the center of the top hole of a 1-U space) of 0.625,
0.625, and 0.5 inch (see Figure 1-2).
5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 with the template over the back of the 2-post rack, if
desired.
Installing the System Chassis in the Rack
CAUTION: The 1-U mounting brackets are designed to support a single
system. Do not attempt to install these brackets on any other system.
Damage to the system and personal injury may result.
CAUTION: Due to the size and weight of the system, never attempt to install
the system by yourself. You may want to use at least two persons to perform
this installation.
1. To remove the optional bezel from the computer front panel, unlock the lock using
the system key, press the tab on the right end of the bezel, and then rotate the
bezel outward and to the left.
2. Temporarily hold the system chassis in the rack so that the front mounting
bracket is about 12.7 mm (0.5 inch) from the two-post rack.
NOTE: This step and steps 3 and 4 require at least two persons to hold the sys-
tem in the rack.
3. Attach the brackets to the sides of the system chassis by positioning the brackets
so that the flange that fastens to the rack faces forward (see Figure 1-5). Select
the hole pattern appropriate for the width of the rack (both 3- and 6-inch rack
widths are accommodated).
4. Secure each bracket to the chassis using two 10-32 x 0.25-inch pan-head Phillips
screws. Do not fully tighten these screws at this time.
5. Lift the system into position to the location you marked earlier. Ensure that the
bottom of the system chassis is at the mark you made on the two-post rack.
