Also,ensuretheVOIPsetupallowsuserstomakecallsonanon‐tollbasistoanynumbersaccessiblewithouttoll
byusers
atallotherlocations ontheVOIPsystem.Consider,forexample,acompanywithVOIP‐equippedoffices
inNewYork,Miami,andLosAngeles,eachservedbyitsownPBX.WhentheVOIPphonebooksaresetcorrectly,
personnelintheMiamiofficeshouldbeabletomakecallswithouttoll
notonlytothecompany’sofficesinNew
YorkandLosAngeles,butalsotoanynumberthat’slocalinthosetwocities.
ToachievetransparencyoftheVOIPtelephonysystemandtogivefulla ccesstoalltypesofnon‐tollcallsmade
possiblebytheVOIPsystem,the
VOIPadministratormustproperlyconfigurethe“Outbound”and“Inbound”
phone‐booksofeachVOIPinthesystem.
The“Outbound”phonebookforaparticularVOIPunitdescribesthedialingsequencesrequiredforacallto
originatelocally(typicallyinaPBXinaparticularfacility)andreachanyofitspossibledestinations
atremote
VOIPsites,includingnon‐tollcallscompletedinthePSTNattheremotesite.
The“Inbound”phonebookforaparticularVOIPunitdescribesthedialingsequencesrequiredforacallto
originateremotelyfromanyotherVOIPsitesinthesystem,andtoterminateonthatparticularVOIP.
TheMultiVOIP’sOutboundphonebookli ststhephonestationsitcancall;itsInboundphonebookdescribesthe
dialingsequencesthatcanbeusedtocallthatMultiVOIPandhowthosecallsaredirected.Thephone numbers
arenotlistedindividually,butare,instead,describedbyrule.

AfterinstallingtheMultiV OIP,confirmthatitisconfiguredandoperatingproperlybycheckingend‐to‐end

DetermineifyouwanttouseH.323,SIP,orSPP.Althoughyoucanmixprotocols inasingl eVOIPsystem,itis
bettertousethesameVOIPprotocolforallVOIPunitsinthesystem.

the“Proprietary”protocol
usedinMulti‐Tech’searliergenerationofVOIPgate ways.
