Firewall support
138 Perceive Getting Started
Firewall support
Perceive can access Perform Agents through corporate firewalls.
For distributed system agent history data sources, the
Manage Data Sources page on
the
Administration tab has a field to enable or disable firewall support. The firewall
setting applies to all the managed systems associated with the relevant data source.
Therefore, you can use a single data source to group all managed systems behind a
firewall.
To enable displaying agent history data from systems with agents outside the
corporate firewall, your firewall must enable the following ports for access from the
internal network where the Perceive server is installed: 10128 for system discovery
and ports 6767 to get data from the agents.
As with all the other data source configuration information, you can apply the
firewall mode when creating a data source or edit it at a later time.
Collecting data from an agentless data source
Perceive lets you collect data from computers that do not have any BMC
Software-provided software installed on them (known as agentless computers).
Agentless computers are computers for which you want to collect performance data,
but do not have an installed Perform agent.
Agentless collection occurs through a proxy host that has been set up to communicate
with computers using either Microsoft's WMI technology or remote performance
registry access. Proxy hosts are the computers from which you initiate data collection
on agentless computers.
WARNING
When you set beginning and ending IP addresses to discover computers, agents
inside and outside of the firewall are discovered. BMC Software strongly
recommends that you do not specify a network address range larger than 256 (for
example, 172.31.11.0 to 172.31.11.255) to avoid lengthy IP discoveries.
NOTE
Firewall support applies only to distributed systems agent history data sources that
refer to Perform agents version 6.6.00 or later. It does not apply to any of the other
supported data sources.
