110 Troubleshooting Your System
Troubleshooting a Tape Backup Unit
CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You
should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your
product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and
support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered
by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the
product.

Try using a different tape cartridge.

Ensure that the device drivers for the tape backup unit are installed and
are configured correctly. See your tape drive documentation for more
information about device drivers.

Reinstall the tape-backup software as instructed in the tape-backup
software documentation.

For external tape drives, ensure that the tape drive’s interface cable is fully
connected to the external port on the controller card. For internal tape
drives, check the cable connections:
a
Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the
system from the electrical outlet.

Open the system. See "Opening the System" on page 45.

Reseat the controller card in the expansion card slot.
d
Ensure that the tape drive's interface cable is fully connected to the
tape drive and to the connector on the controller card (SAS).

Ensure that a power cable is properly connected to the drive and to
the system board.
f
Close the system. See "Closing the System" on page 46.

Run the appropriate online diagnostics tests. See "Using Online
Diagnostics" on page 115.
