3. Pull the end of the plastic ribbon sticking out of the battery
compartment toward the batteries until they pop out.
4. Set the two switches inside of the battery compartment for the
type of batteries being used.
Refer to the diagram inside the battery compartment which
indicates the positions for alkaline (
ALK) and nickel-
cadmium (
NiCd) batteries (refer to Figure E-1).
Make sure Switch 2 is in the NiCd position. If necessary, use a
pen or a small screwdriver to slide the switch to that position.
Switch 1 may be in either position.
5. Lay the plastic ribbon along the bottom of the battery
compartment with the end hanging out of the compartment.
6. Find the positive (
+) and negative (-) symbols on the battery pack’s
label (refer to
Figure E-2). With the label facing up, tilt the
negative end of the pack into the upper end of the battery
compartment, and then gently press the positive end until it is
fully inserted into the battery compartment.

7. Replace the battery-compartment cover by sliding it into place.
Make sure the plastic ribbon is tucked underneath the cover.
