because most Internet service providers use
DHCP.
Select Use the following IP Address only if
you are using a static IP address. (You should
know if you are using static IP addressing.
There is typically an extra charge for a static
IP address and you usually have to make
special arrangements with your Internet
service provider to get one.)
Enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask,
Default Gateway, and DNS that you plan to
use. Click Save Changes, then click Write
Settings to Flash.
4 Verify that your Internet connection is working. Open your
Web browser and try to connect to a familiar Web address. If
you connect successfully, you are ready to set up the rest of
your network.
If you cannot connect to the Internet, see
Troubleshooting on
page 153.
Tip!
If you configured the X6v using a notebook computer, you can
keep it plugged in or you can disconnect it from the unit’s
ETHERNET port. As long as the X6v remains plugged into an
ADSL wall jack and a power source, the X6v can function as a
stand-alone device. You can then make the notebook part of your
wireless network.
Congratulations! You have established communication and your
computer is connected to the Internet.
If you want to configure a VoIP account, first set up your network
- if desired - and then continue with
Chapter 4, Setting Up VoIP
Service on page 39.
If you want to connect other computers to the X6v, continue with
Setting Up a Network below.
