Glossary
KVM Expander: A device that allows users to expand the number of servers
connected to their existing KVM configuration. It does not have a console port,
so it must be daisy-chained to a KVM switch or Rack-Mount Console KVM
Switch for a user to access the servers.
KVM Switch: A device that allows a user to access and control multiple servers
from a single console. It has at least one console port and multiple server ports.
OSD: On-Screen Display, a Graphical User Interface that can be used to control
and configure the KVM Switch.
Port: An interface receptor on a server through which you can attach a device or
plug in a device cable.
Primary KVM Switch: A KVM switch set to BANK address 00–03 only with a
console attached.
Rack-Mount Console KVM Switch: In this User Manual, this term is used to
refer to the Belkin OmniView ENTERPRISE 1U Rack-Mount Console with Built-In
8-Port KVM Switch.
Secondary KVM Switch: Any KVM device without a console attached
(BANK address 04–15).
Select Mode: The mode of operation a daisy-chained KVM device, in Static
Mode, enters when the first front-panel button is pressed. Select Mode allows
the user to select BANKs, hosts, etc. with the next button press.
Standalone: A single KVM switch that operates independently (not connected
to others).
Static Mode: The predominant mode of operation of the KVM device. The KVM
device enters this state whenever it has not received a button press for at least
five seconds.
View: When discussing switching between ports, viewing means that the
console is receiving video from the server. Viewing requires that the console also
has focus on the port.
