General Program Problems
A program crashes
HINT: Software usually
includes installation
instructions in its
documentation or on a
floppy disk or CD.
A program stops responding
A solid blue screen appears
CHECK THE DRIVE FOR ERRORS
1 In Windows XP, click the Start button and click My Computer.
2 Right-click the drive letter (local disk) that you want to scan for errors, and
then click Properties.
3 Click the Tools tab.
4 Under Error-checking, click Check Now.
5 Click Start.
SEE THE SOFTWARE DOCUMENTATION Many software manufacturers
maintain websites with information that may help you solve the problem. Ensure
that you properly installed and configured the program. Reinstall the program if
necessary.
END THE PROGRAM
1 Simultaneously press .
2 Click the Applications tab, and then select the program that is no longer
responding.
3 Click the End Task button.
TURN THE COMPUTER OFF If the computer does not respond to a
keystroke or a proper shutdown (see page 20), press the power button until the
computer turns off. Press the power button again to restart the computer. The
solid blue screen appears because you were not able to perform a proper
Windows
®
shutdown. ScanDisk automatically runs during the start-up process.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
