4. Close the hard disk drive stopper to secure the hard disk drive in place.
Notes:
• Make sure that the hard disk drive is inserted tightly into the hard disk drive adapter.
• You cannot insert a hard disk drive for other ThinkPad computers into this ThinkPad Serial Hard Drive
Bay Adapter III. If you want to use the les on the hard disk drive of another ThinkPad computer, copy
the les to a removable storage device.
Inserting the secondary hard disk drive adapter into the bay
Depending on the computer state, to install the secondary hard disk drive with adapter into the Serial
Ultrabay Slim bay, do one of the following:
• When the computer is turned off. Install the hard disk drive with adapter following instructions in
“Replacing the Serial Ultrabay Slim device” on page 92.
• When the computer is in sleep mode. Install the hard disk drive with adapter following instructions in
“Performing a warm-swap operation” on page 97.
• When the computer is operating. Install the hard disk drive with adapter following instructions in
“Performing a hot swap operation” on page 97.
If you install the hard disk drive with adapter into the bay while the computer is in sleep mode or operating,
and the hard disk drive is protected by a password, you cannot get access to the drive right after installing
the adapter into the bay. To get access to it, do the following:
1. Put your computer into hibernation mode.
2. Press the power button to return to normal operation. The hard disk password icon is displayed at
the upper left of the screen.
3. Type the password. Then you can get access to the hard disk drive.
Note: When you install the hard disk drive with adapter into the bay, make sure that you install it rmly. You
can secure the hard disk drive adapter by installing a hex-head screw (included in the shipping contents)
into the screw hole.
