Wireless Multimedia Support Quality of Service
Wireless Multimedia (WMM) is a subset of the 802.11e standard. WMM allows wireless traffic to
have a range of priorities, depending on the kind of data. Time-dependent information such as
video or audio will have a higher priority than normal traffic. For WMM to function correctly,
wireless clients must also support WMM.
WMM quality of service (WMM QoS) allows for the prioritization of wireless voice and video
traffic from different applications. WMM QoS is based on four access categories: voice, video,
best effort, and background. For an application to receive the benefits of WMM QoS, both the
application and the client that is running that application must be WMM-enabled. Legacy
applications that do not support WMM and applications that do not require QoS are assigned to the
best-effort category, which receives a lower priority than the voice and video categories.
WMM QoS is enabled by default and is not user-configurable.
