Cluster terms and components
Nodes
The most basic parts of a cluster are the servers, referred to as nodes. A server node is any individual
computer in a cluster, or a member of the cluster.
Resourc
es
Hardware and software components that are mana ge d by the cluster service are called cluster resources.
Cluster r esources have three dening characteristics:
They can be brought online and taken ofine.
They ca
n be m anaged in a cluster.
Theycanbeownedbyonlyonenodeatatime.
Examples of cluster resources are IP addresses, network names, physical disk resources, and le shares.
Virtual servers
A virtual server is a cluster group that consists of a static IP Address resource and a Net work Name
resource. Several virtual servers can be created. By assigning ownership of the virtual servers to the
different server nodes, the pro cessing load on the storage servers can be distributed between the nodes
of a cluster.
The creation of a virtual server allows resources de pendent on the virtual server to fail over and fail back
between the cluster nodes. File share and physical disks resources are assigned to the virtual ser ver to
ensure non-disruptive ser vice of le shares to the clients.
